Bilbao – the most popular city of the Basque Country

The Basque Country (Baskonia or Euskadi) is a large and economically developed Autonomous Community in northern Spain, and perhaps the most mysterious of all the Spanish regions. The Basque people’s landscape, climate, character, language, and mentality are not very similar to the typical Spanish ones. There is a lot of greenery, it often rains and it’s not that hot. The Basques themselves are very hardworking and energetic and their language (Euskara) is absolutely autonomous and does not look like any other language in the world. As a side note, there is also the French Basque Country, and the Gascogne province is attributed to it, the famous Dumas character – D’Artagnan was born in Gascogne.
The Basque country’s capital is the city of Vitoria-Gasteiz, and the largest Basque city is Bilbao. It is the largest city in northern Spain, in the province of Bizkaia and in the Basque Country as a whole, as well as the tenth-largest city in Spain. As of 2017, the population was 342,397 people. More than 1 million inhabitants live in the Gran Bilbao comarca together with 35 municipalities, making it one of the most densely populated agglomerations in northern Spain. Bilbao is the main urban area of the territory called the Basque Country.
